How would you like a list of all the VOR's in California? CAVEAT: The list of VOR's appearing below is a MANUAL TRANSCRIPTION, BY ME, of data from various sources. My transcription was fairly painstaking, but I can't guarantee the correctness of the data. If this idea catches on, it might elicit similar lists from netters in other states, and we might even contemplate the evolution of a rec.aviation standard navaid database. Netters would be in an ideal position to submit timely changes, as well. For example, how many California aviators know that the frequency for the Gaviota VOR has just changed? (The freq appearing below is correct.) Jeppesen just sent me a slew of new approach plates necessitated by the change, but didn't send a revised enroute chart. I've subscribed to the service for a bit over a year and have never experienced such a thing, so I was puzzled. I called Jeppesen and was told that the FAA, in its wisdom, decided to change the VOR frequency without waiting for the end of the standard 56-day pub cycle. Ergo, your sectionals and enroutes may be in error WRT Gaviota! My proposed standard data format has been designed for ease of manipulation by tools such as grep(1) and awk(1). (Non-Unix sites, eat your hearts out. :-) ) All fields are blank-delimited. Field 1 is the identifier. Field 2 is the frequency. Fields 3 and 4 are the latitude and longitude, respectively. Field 5 is the magnetic variation. Field 6 is the site elevation (MSL), with '*' denoting an unavailable elevation; note that the elevation may be, and in California sometimes is, negative. Field 7 is the class of navaid: 'H' = high service volume, 'L' = low service volume, 'T' = terminal, and a trailing 'D' denotes DME. Field 8 is a one-word description of use; '*' designates no voice, and the name of an FSS denotes that the FSS can be received from the navaid. Field 9 gives the civil name. So whaddya think? Is this information available from some other source in machine-readable text form? Even if it is, how easy is it to get updates? Should we even consider something as ambitious as a net database? If so, could the data be for- matted better? In any event, enjoy my transcription for what it's worth. (My optical scanner just had its annual inspection by an Airframe & Optometric Technician.)
