You have to hold a commercial license to get a flight instructor certificate, but you only need a third (3rd) class physical to get or exercise a flight instructor certificate. If you are not PIC and not a required crewmember (ie, not a safety pilot), you can instruct with *no* medical, and get paid for it. However, you do need a third to get an initial flight instructor certificate. US average: 75 hrs, from earthling to private. 1. Don't land till you get to the airport. 2. Pee every chance you get. "Asking me to overlook safety because of your time constraints is asking me to re-evaluate the value I place on your life." 75% of human failures in accidents involved someone who was either going through a divorce/marriage or a change of career. DC-10 accident in Mexico City some years back: The captain was apparently regarded as a jerk, and he had written up the flight engineer for having hair too long. The flight engineer was in turn having an affair with a lady in the back of the plane, who was flying to Mexico City to get a divorce from her husband, the second officer. Talk about cockpit stress!! Risk assessment - before every flight, ask yourself, what TAPES am I playing? Time - what time pressures are there during the flight, like lowering weather, sunset, fuel. Aircraft - what shape is it in? Pilot - more on that below. Environment - weather, winds, ATC, airport conditions Situation - what happens if I don't get there? Pilot checklist - IM SAFE Illness Medication Stress - especially job, marriage, friends, etc Alcohol Fatigue Eating habits At one British base, they cut their accident rate 80% by checking each flight crew for stress before they launched. Low risk aircrews were dispatched, medium risk aircrews needed a signoff by the *Base Commander* and high risk aircrews were not allowed to fly. Student pilots do not need to carry a logbook. Average pilot flies 10 hrs/year. Can give a BFR in a simulator with FSDO approval. 766 midairs in last 30 years, 44% had no fatalities. 19 midairs between GA and air carrier, 32% of these with no fatalities. 50% of fatalities were a faster low wing overtaking a slower high wing on final approach. 50% of midairs involve flight instruction.
