While at Oshkosh, I picked up a stack of these during a visit to the FAA Building, and brought them back to show to the curriculum director of our local school district: IT MADE HER DAY! The director explained that many state education boards are looking for ways to teach math and science skills within a Real World context, to provide younger children with concrete applications, and to motivate middle and high school children toward technical careers. Aviation was just the ticket! She was impressed with the range and breadth of the materials: lesson plans, booklets, reading lists, exercises, experiments, and resource guides to the availability of films and videos. They covered not only technical aspects of aviation, but included historical and social sections covering aviation's contribution to exploration and commerce, and some individual achievements of women and minorities. The FAA is not automatically sending these educational materials out; it takes an interested person to see them through to the right hands. The State of New Jersey has begun establishment of an aviation education program (shellEy "Rah, rah, rah" Rosenbaum took part in their first conference), and Oregon is just beginning to develop one thanks to a boardmember who's a fellow 99er (and who painted her Archer to look like mine :-) ). Your school district or state may not be aware of what can be had from the FAA for free. Call your regional GADO and ask for the Education Officer. Get these avtax supported materials into your schools and turn young people's minds skyward!
