They occasionally required blasting and would call the tower to get the OK before setting off the charge. This was done as courtesy to the flying public so as not to knock an aircraft out of the sky with a chunk of earth. The person throwing the switch would be the one making the phone call; so as soon as the 'all clear' was given, KAAABOOOMMMMMM!!!!!! Well.... one day the quarry called and requested to set off a charge. The secretary had taken the call, called the tower cab and said there was a call on line 1 for the supervisor, failing to mention it was the quarry. The sup simply hit line 1 and using controllerese said, "Go ahead". The reply on the other end was, "Thanks" followed by a click of the phone hanging up and a KAAABOOOOMMMMM!!!! The BE100 on final for 31 was certainly surprised to see pieces of rock come up to greet him. No dents or damage, but the sup was ALWAYS told when the quarry was on the phone.
