In the section on "Heavy Rain": "The aircraft may slow considerably from the impact with a wall of water. When engines ingest enough water they stop running and you slow down even more." In the section on "Heavy Airframe Icing and Freezing Rain": "You can easily identify freezing rain because in the blink of an eye you can't see out of the airplane anymore and anything you have in form of deice equipment doesn't help. Usually a lower altitude will be warmer and help melt the ice. Under these conditions the aircraft will seek a lower altitude automatically without pilot intervention." [Too bad the wry humor is spoiled a bit by omission of the fact that freezing rain implies warmer temperatures at *higher* altitudes.] -- brecher@btr.com (Steve Brecher)
